Born Fonyuy Leonard Nsohburinka on August 31, 1990, in Buea, Cameroon, Mr. Leo has grown to become one of Africa’s most influential musical icons. Hailing from Nso, he was raised in the Warders Barracks of Buea, a backdrop that would shape his artistic journey. Attending Salvation Bilingual High School and later the Catholic University of Buea, Mr. Leo earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. However, his true passion lay elsewhere.

Mr. Leo’s musical journey began earnestly in 2010 when he entered the Gospel Musical contest. His early days saw him as a member of the group Break Through Voices. By 2012, he had released his first singles “Coletta” and “No Judge,” but it wasn’t until he dropped “E go Better” in 2013 that he began to capture wider attention, thanks to a collaboration with his mentor Salatiel.
Breakthrough and Major Hits of Mr. Leo
2015 was a pivotal year for Mr. Leo. Under Alpha Better Records, he released “On va gérer,” followed by the massive hit “Jamais Jamais” in 2016, which has since garnered over 14 million views on YouTube. This track solidified his status in the African music scene. Other notable releases from this period include “C’est faux,” “Femme” featuring Rude Bway, and “Kemayo.”

Mr. Leo’s international appeal was evident when he performed at Afrimma in 2017. That same year, he released his debut album “Love Original,” featuring hits like “Hallelujah,” “Jamais Jamais,” and “On Va Gérer.” His collaborations with international acts like Flavour, Hiro, and Fanicko further expanded his reach.

Mr. Leo’s talent and hard work have earned him numerous awards, including three Balafon Music Awards in 2016, Best New Artist at the Urban Jamz Awards, and the African Entertainment Award for Best Male Single in the USA. In 2021, he was honored at the Cameroon Music Evolution Awards for Best Indigenous Sound and Best Songwriter.
Ambassadorial Roles and Other Achievements
Beyond music, Mr. Leo has served as a brand ambassador for several high-profile brands, including Itel, Orijin, Yango, and Bantu Blockchain. In 2021, he became a member of the Grammy Recording Academy and founded the Lion of Africa Music and Arts Academy. His role as a WWF Champion for Nature highlights his commitment to social and environmental causes.
Personal Life
Mr. Leo’s personal life is as vibrant as his professional one. He is in a relationship with Soppi Blanche and is a proud father of three children: Joy(with whom he had with the talented singer; Mary Asaba), Leon, and Arika.
